The Analytical Studies of Organic Farming in Korea
Dong Jun Kim, Bong Kyu Park
Ihwa Ŭidae chi 1979;2(1):1-17.   Published online July 24, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.12771/emj.1979.2.1.1

The organic farming has recently been introduced into Korea by the mass media mainly through news papers, TV, and the farmers who are interested in the organic farming abroad. The organic farmers wish to avoid the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that demage soil and create toxic effects in the wild life and human body. They are also very much concerned about the adding humus and other organic matters to soil in order to improve fertility, energy conservation, and proper nutrition. The organic farming has been costly conducted in Korea in the workshop of Korea Association of Agricultural Specialists. With the ecological studies, we have learned that there are much differences of the divergence, number of species appearance among perennial and annual herbs, species population fluctuation, and entrophication between the organic and conventional farming. In conventional farming, we found that the mercury and cadmium in the soil of An Yang River area are over 0.2ppm and 2ppm respectively, and the cadmium in the rice over 1ppm, although the heavy metal contents in the irrigation water of rice fields are below the control limit of Korean Government. Even in the organic farming, the cadmium contents in the soil of the sea side are over 1ppm. This shows the cadmium are widely distributed through this country. With the advent of the energy crisis, farmers have been facing at present the shortage of fertilizers and pesticides that require petroleum as a source of both the raw materials and the heat in the process of the manufacture. The organic which the present world has to confront.

Effect of Viscaceae on the Cholesterol biosynthesis in the rat liver tissue
N.E. Sung
Ihwa Ŭidae chi 1979;2(1):19-23.   Published online July 24, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.12771/emj.1979.2.1.19

Rats being fed with 1% Viscaceae powder containing diet for 10 weeks, total cholesterol in serum and liver tissue decreased by 17% and neutral fat decreased by 10%. And also, hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity had a tendency to decrease by 43% in the 1% Viscaceae fed group. In saponin fraction of Viscaceae fed group and in alkaloidal fraction of Viscaceae fed group, it had a tendency to decrease by 65%, and 86% expectively.

The common disaccharides in our diet, lactose, sucrose and maltose, have to be split into monosaccharides by enzymes in the small intestinal epithelial cells. Clinically the most common disaccahridase deficiency encountered is that of lactase. Recently the radiographic method of diagnosing intestinal lactose deficient during consecutive routine upper gastrointestinal examination was assessed. In the present study, we report the results of a clinical study on the incidence of lactase deficiency in a group of healthy Korean adults. The sample group consisted of 50 males and 50 females with a range in age from 20 to 72 years. A total of 100 cases given a colloid barium(100ml) to with 25gm of lactose had been added. The 30 minutes lactose-barium study, evaluated as a screening test. Criterial previously described by Laws et al. were used for the radiographic evaluation. The features used in diagnosis were dilatation of the small bowel, apparent dilution of the barium-lactose mixture in the small intestine, and transit of the mixture to the colon on the 30 minutes film. All three features were required for a diagnosis of lactase deficiency. Of 100 cases, 39% showed all thress findings of lactase deficiency and 31% one or two abnormal findings. Thus, the total incidence of lactase deficiency, complete or partial, as revealed by barium-lactose screening test was 70%. This suggests that environmental factors may be important in the pathogenesis of lactase deficiency in Korean adults.

A Comparative Study of Schizophrenic and Medical Inpatients as Informed Drug Consumers
Haing Won Woo
Ihwa Ŭidae chi 1979;2(1):43-47.   Published online July 24, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.12771/emj.1979.2.1.43

Fifty schizophrenic inpatients receiving antipsychotic medications were evaluated as informed and or consenting drug consumers by means of structured interview, in comparison with a matched group of medical inpatients receiving nonpsychotrpic drugs. Medical patients were better informed about positive aspects of medication, such as relationship of drug treatment to a specific diagnosis and not better informed about positive aspects of medication, such as name and dose. Schizophrenic patients, however, were significantly better informed about side effects and risks. Although both groups felt that their medication had helped them, 84% of the medical patients but only 72% of the schizophrenic patients said they would take the medication if they had choice. The fact that schizophrenic inpatients readly shared their reluctance to take medication with an interviewer may offer an avenue for detection and intervention improve prospects for outpatient compliance.

Leiomysarcoma of the Stomach: Report of One Case
Yorng Man Choi
Ihwa Ŭidae chi 1979;2(1):57-61.   Published online July 24, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.12771/emj.1979.2.1.57

The incidence of the leiomyosarcoma is 1~3% of all gastric malignant tumors and 20~25% of all gastric sarcoma. It is hard to differentiate between the benign leiomyoma and leiomosarcoma by gross finding, radiologic studies and endoscopic studies, even microscopically. The main symptoms and signs are epigastric discomfort or pain, palpable mass, bleeding and anemia, weight loss and anorexia. The prognosis of the leiomyosarcoma is better than carcinoma or other sarcoma such as lymphosarcoma. In Surgical Department, College of Medicine, Ewha Womans University, author had experienced one case of leiomyosarcoma confirmed by microscopically in 32 years old female patient, which was located in the antrum of the lesser curvature and type was endo-exogastric type. Operative procedure was made subtotal gastrectomy. I intend to report this case with review of the literatures.

Han Joong Kim
Ihwa Ŭidae chi 1979;2(1):63-65.   Published online July 24, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.12771/emj.1979.2.1.63

The solitary bone cyst is an uncommon lesion of the maxilla. The etiology and pathogenesis of this cyst remain unknown. Several theories have been advanced: the only widely accepted one is the theory of origin from intramedullary hemorrhage after trauma. Author has been experienced a case of solitary bone cyst on the maxilla. A 26-year-old male who complained of protruded mass on right medial aspect of the infraorbital region, this bony mass was completely resected and primary closure was carried out in layers. Pathologic diagnosis was solitary bone cyst. Author reported an experience and reviewed literatures.
